The camera pans across the bridge of a large freighter. The crew is ready at the helm, the Captain steadfast and master of all he sees. The first mate, binoculars permanently attached to his eyes, stops, points off the bow and utters pure gibberish. Subtitles (because all humungous freighters seem to have foreign crews) tell us he has spotted another vessel on an intercept course! Alarms sound, people run everywhere, and we see the Captain squint his eyes then utter that one terrifying word…”sailboat!”.
Yah, right. This is where I normally wake up in a sweat, the nightmare/dream still fresh in my mind. I know a sailboat under sail has the right of way, but isn't it a bit like playing chicken with a locomotive? For all I know nobody is even up there, the thing could be driving itself!
As I fall back asleep, my mind reviews emergency tacking, what little I’ve read about maritime law, and wether I paid that last life insurance premium.
