B is for Bilge

A right of passage.
That's how some portray the dreaded bilge.
This is where the new boater comes to terms with the nitty gritty of neglect, the standing water in every nightmare B movie that involves a dark and often inaccessible area. Drip drip drip...such a cliche. But the dock queen of several years is bound to meet those awful expectations, even excel.
This can be the make or break of a potential sailor. The fortitude, the fearlessness to address this place of lore and legend humbles many a strong constitution.
Our curse is that this hidden festering culture of unknown organisms is there to stay, even follow us wherever we go unless brushes and cleaners are taken up in arms.

This separates us from the 'trailer sailor'. We are here to stay no matter what the odds. No matter how dark the water. This must, and will, be dealt with.
This is our right of passage, to say in one clear voice "yes, we cleaned the bilge".

Ha ha ha! You've hit the nail on the head. The bilge on most boats can be a dark and scary underworld. I've been known to lie awake in bed some nights wondering how on earth I can find my way to its furthest corners to clean whatever is lurking on the bottom. I still haven't figured it out, but (fortunately) I have been able to shine a (flash) light on the "problem" and all is well!
